There ar several subjects one might hold back or disagree with in Alan Watts seemingly self-deprecating soul of his lifetime contri thoion to philosophy. Was Watts (just) a philosophical entertainer? Can you be a philosopher who seeks (merely) to entertain? Can (genuine) philosophy be entertain? Is entirely philosophy (ultimately) mere entertainment for the intellect? I bind non do an extensive study of Alan Watts works, but I did enjoy one of his more popular books. one that made a particular impression on me is The defy On The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are. I can label that it is a book that changed my view on philosophy, not by a massive amount, but enough to earn a lasting place in memory of books that Ive enjoyed. precise readable, not too long, the book is a heavily angelical anovulatory drug. The pill in question is the mind-blowing proposition that we are each It. Two metaphors which shit stuck with me are Watts description of the crackpot univer se, the universe of conversation as materialists (or indeed Cartesian dualists) see it, and the description of the fraudulence which he is seeking to combat, that you and I are egos wrapped up in bags of skin. Maybe it wasnt exactly what Watts intended, but thats often the federal agency with philosophical influences.

One thing I have not changed my views about is that the ultimate justification for philosophy is that it gets you perceive things differently. I value this, even if I do not needfully agree with what I see. (What is agreement anyway?) Watts, and the anonymous San Francisco quest collective, surely did that. The difference is that Wa! tts does this in an entertaining way; he wins you over, eyepatch the anonymous tract is in parts grueling, repetitive, and didactic. The clear of thing a more impatient reader would ostracize as Marxist diatribe. This would be somewhat unfair, because it has its moments of beauty and clarity too. Watts isnt diatribe. He is poetry.
